Description:
The King of India, Polo (Porus), was defeated in battle against the army of Alexander (Alessandro) the Great. He decides to die, but is replaced by his subordinate Gandartes and taken prisoner. King Alexander is attracted by the beauty of Cleophida, Porro's wife, and proposes marriage. In despair, she accepts Alexander the Great's marriage proposal, believing him to be dead, but when she goes to the wedding, he reveals his identity and begs her forgiveness, even at the risk of death. Handel's operas in Italian were very popular at the time, and within a year of its premiere, this work was being performed in England and throughout Europe. Telemann knew this and had the Italian recitative by Metastasio translated into German by Christoph Gottlieb Wendt so that the Hamburg audience could understand the intertwining of the turbulent life of Alexander the Great, King Polo of India, and his wife Cleofida, and the heroine of the story, the wife of Polo. The heroine of the story was changed to Cleofida, the wife of Polo, and the whole story was restructured. The aria is therefore sung in Italian, as in Handel's original.The performance was given by Il Gusto Barocco, one of the most important baroque orchestras in southern Germany.
