Description:
The "Polyphonia Ensemble Berlin," formed by members of the Deutsche Symphonieorchester Berlin, presents a collection of modern French chamber music. Du Bois, Dandy, and Capre are three composers who have been overshadowed by their contemporaries and have not been given much prominence, but who have played an important and unique role in the development of French music. Dubois studied under Thomas at the Paris Conservatory, and after winning the Grand Prix de Rome, he became director of music at the Madeleine Abbey and professor at the Paris Conservatory, where he trained many of his successors. He left behind religious works and ballets, but this duet for string quintet and woodwind quintet is one of his later works, and is characterized by its thick harmony. Dandy's "Songs and Dances," known for his "Symphony on the Songs of the French Mountain Men," is a septet for flute, oboe, two clarinets, two bassoons, and horns. The work is composed of a song section reminiscent of Franck and a dance section with an appealing light tune. The "Persian Suite" by Capre, known for his orchestral arrangements of Debussy's works, is a wind quartet with a stylish use of exotic melodies. The light sound of the winds alone is attractive.
