Description:
Swiss composer Richard Flury. While at university, he took composition lessons from the Romantic composer Hans Huber; after graduating, he studied composition with Josef Marx and conducting with Felix Weingartner, embarking on a career as a musician. This *Bright Night* is Flury’s second opera; after being broadcast once on the radio in 1935, it was never performed again. Flury relentlessly portrays a story in which various human emotions—such as love, reason, jealousy, obsession, and revenge—intertwine, blending late-Romantic sounds reminiscent of Richard Strauss with tones reminiscent of Alban Berg. The lead role of the doctor is sung by Daniel Ochoa, well known for his recordings of German lieder and cantatas. The performance is conducted by Paul Mann, who specializes in Flury’s works.
