Symphony No. 3, Dedicated to Wagner, Whom He Admired Deeply The “First Draft,” in which his Wagnerian creative style is particularly vividly expressed, performed by Anima Eterna (period instruments), led by Elas-Casado! The second installment of Pablo Elas-Casado’s highly anticipated Bruckner series with Anima Eterna is now available. His meticulous performance with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra during his April 2026 visit to Japan also garnered significant attention. Given that he is set to conduct the Bayreuth “Ring” cycle starting in 2028, his performance of Symphony No. 3 with a period-instrument orchestra—which carries a distinct “Wagnerian” flavor—is sure to draw significant attention. Among Bruckner’s symphonies, the Third was revised particularly frequently, resulting in three versions. Elas-Casado has chosen the First Draft for the first movement—which is based on the Second Draft— and the first movement is nearly 100 measures longer than in the third version; it features quotations from Wagner and is full of the raw, unpolished charm of the first version. Elas-Casado meticulously brings out the appeal of this vast and intricately woven music. The sound produced by the period instrument wind section is also captivating. HARMONIAMUNDI
