Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was recognized for his musical talent from an early age. He studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory and graduated from the piano department at the age of 18. The following year, he graduated from the composition department of the same conservatory, and his graduation project was an hour-long opera, "Aleko," based on Pushkin's novel. The first performance of "The Cheap Knight," premiered in 1906, tells the story of an old baron and his profligate son, who have become money losers. It is unique in that the second scene consists of a monologue by the baron. Francesca da Rimini" is another work from the same period. Like Tchaikovsky's Fantasy, it is based on Dante's "Divine Comedy" from the Inferno, and depicts the consequences of irredeemable love.The production features Sergei Leiferkus and other famous Russian singers throughout. The cast of mostly male characters together makes for a fascinating performance that is extremely profound and bursting with bass appeal. Naxos Japan
