Living under Taliban rule, Pavana grew up listening to the stories her father told her and helping him earn a living by reading and writing letters to people in the marketplace. One day, her father is arrested by the Taliban, and Pavana's life changes forever. The Taliban forbids women from leaving home without a man, so the family cannot earn money or even go out to buy food. To support her family as the family breadwinner, Pavana cuts her hair and becomes a "boy. Pavana is determined to find a way to save her father, despite the dangers.
