In this piece, Kondo’s true talent shines through in his well-defined, crystalline solo, while the Martinů Quartet’s lively ensemble playing adds a chamber-music-like charm to the performance. As for the Dvořák piece, with the quartet’s unique “Dvořák style”—rooted in the delicate folk traditions of the Czech Republic—Kondo must surely have thoroughly enjoyed the quintet, entrusting himself to the music as if he were literally aboard a large ship.
