It seems the dandyish charm of male vocal quartets resonates well with the Japanese. This CD brings together a collection of classic German art songs performed by a quartet. Schubert’s works evoke the simple joys of Viennese bourgeois life, where close-knit gentlemen gather to sing and enjoy themselves in a convivial atmosphere. Philipp Friedrich Zilcher is, of course, the composer of “Lorelei.” This is a live recording from the Rheingau Music Festival in Johannisberg. Not only is the performance by the four singers of the highest caliber, but it also captures the unique excitement of a live performance.
