Trio Vandaler takes on Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet. With guest musicians joining in, their fresh take on this masterpiece offers a unique twist! The Trio Vandala, a veteran French piano trio, released Shostakovich’s two piano trios on Harmonia Mundi in 2004—a recording still regarded as a classic today. Now, some 15 years later, they’ve taken on Shostakovich once again. It’s particularly noteworthy that this time they’ve invited guests to perform not only the iconic Piano Quintet but also “Seven Songs on Poems by Brok,” in which the piano trio accompanies a mezzo-soprano. With the addition of Catherine Montier and Christophe Gaugé to the Piano Quintet, the ensemble achieves an even grander sense of scale. The rich expressiveness achieved through a slightly slower tempo is unique. In the “Seven Songs on Poems by Brok,” another highlight is the solo performance by mezzo-soprano Semenchuk, who has garnered attention in recent years for her appearances at venues such as the Mariinsky, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New National Theatre. At the premiere of this work, Oistrakh, Rostropovich, and Weinberg provided the accompaniment; however, rather than merely supporting the vocals—which require a high degree of expression and inspiration—the three members of Trio Wanderer bring Shostakovich’s world to life with astonishing skill and nuance.
