A concert featuring a master recorder player performing on period instruments. A unique new work by a young artist Lucy Horsch, a young recorder player from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is releasing a new album that pays tribute to the legacy of Frans Brüggen (1934–2014), a Dutch master recorder player and conductor. This is a unique project featuring performances on Brüggen’s rare historical instruments. Brüggen was a true pioneer in the revival of early music and owned a magnificent collection of historical recorders dating from the 1680s to the 1740s. These instruments lay silent for ten years after Brüggen’s death. Now, with special permission from Mrs. Brüggen, they have been brought back to life by Lucy, a native of Brüggen’s hometown. The instruments are fragile, and at times Lucy was only able to play them twice. “The final result probably sounds almost like a live recording,” says Lucy Holsch. What makes this Brüggen collection unique is that he selected each instrument not for display in a museum, but based on its musical quality. Lucy chose pieces to suit the sound of each instrument, and some of them required her to completely change her playing technique. The album features the 18th Century Orchestra, founded by Brüggen; Rachel Poggi on violin; and Brüggen’s nephew, Albert Brüggen, on cello. “During the short time I had to prepare the instruments, I came to understand that playing them restores their inherent power. I realized just how much life is breathed into them when one’s breath and its moisture gently enter the instrument.
