The album is a collection of works reflecting his experiences in his second home in the United States.Arguably one of the most talented artists of his generation, Trifonov has explored his voice and cultural roots through groundbreaking performances of European classical works. This album traces his journey as an immigrant in the "New World" through American piano works ranging from jazz and swing to modernism, minimalism, and soundtracks. The album is a personal journey through Trifonov's mind as he reflects on the piano music that has captivated him and shaped his "American Story. I'm interested in how the piano is used in different genres in America," said Trifonov. This diverse repertoire' has introduced me to many perspectives, styles, cultures, places, people, stories, and expressions that have shaped and filled my American experience" (Daniil Trifonov). The project consists of two great American piano concertos almost a century apart, George Gershwin's 1925 Piano Concerto in F major, commissioned for Trifonov and premiered in 2022 with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Mason Bates's The piano concertos are placed in chronological order between the other recordings. Trifonov follows a thrillingly varied path between them. Aaron Copland's piano variations (1930), Trifonov's transcription of Art Tatum's 1949 recording of "I Cover the Waterfront," the slow, meditative, harmonically rich version of "When I Fall in Love," version by Bill Evans; music from the Hollywood films "The Firm Law Firm" and "American Beauty" and John Cage's innovative "4:33," in which Trifonoff captures the essence of the connection. It is a journey from the Columbus Circle subway station in New York City, through the hustle and bustle of the most densely populated and diverse city in North America, to the lush, open spaces of Central Park. Trifonov left Moscow as a young man and began his life in the United States. Although enamored with his European heritage, he enjoyed expanding his piano repertoire in response to his own curious mind, creative soul, and the many musical influences from his second home. My American Story: North" completes his musical autobiography to date. The album's sequel, My American Story: South, will present the music of Latin America, which he also calls home.
