Here comes the world premiere recording of a collection of motets by Melchior Frank, who was active during the 16th and 17th centuries. Melchior Frank (c. 1579-1639), along with Praetorius, Schütz, Schein, and Scheidt, was an extremely prolific Protestant church music composer active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the transitional period from the late Renaissance to the early Baroque. He was especially prolific in motets, leaving behind more than 40 motets and 600 pieces of music. He was one of the composers who brought the innovations of the Venetian style of composition northward across the Alps to Germany. Born probably around 1579 in Zittau in southeastern Saxony, Germany, he received his higher education in Augsburg, established himself as a music teacher in Nuremberg until 1601, and in 1602 became court conductor to Johann Kazimir, Duke of Saxe-Coburg, in Coburg until 1639. He served as a musician until 1639, when he died. He was forgotten and not rediscovered until the end of the 19th century, 100 years after his death.The works included here are world premiere recordings of religious motets by Melchior Frank, drawing influences from Italian and Dutch music and demonstrating his mastery of polyphony and liturgical text settings. With impressive use of instrumental ensembles, this collection of motets focusing on themes such as creation, praise, John the Baptist, the Immaculate Conception, and the Nativity of Jesus, is a true musical discovery that demonstrates the diversity and richness of his music, highlighted by the profound polyphony and spiritual depth of 17th century music.
