The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and its music director David Robertson weave together a magnificent feast of sound. John Coolidge Adams' style has certainly undergone a gradual change over the past decade or so, and the music heard here already seems to diverge from "post-minimalism. City Noir" has an air of the late 1940s and early 1950s, and while it may appear to be inspired by film soundtracks, it is in fact a tribute to that era itself. It has a heavy sound, jazz elements, and a few minimalist elements. It is both a collage and a vision of Adams' mind. The Saxophone Concerto is a thrilling piece of music with extremely technical saxophones and an orchestra that intertwines with them, bringing out both the lyrical and mobile qualities of the saxophone.It is a unique piece of music that, while also incorporating elements of jazz, is not jazz in itself, but is so insistent that it evokes a sense of humor. This work would not be possible without Timothy McAllister, who plays the saxophone here with great skill, and who premiered this piece in August 2013 and continues to play it with an excitement reminiscent of the "great jazz players of the past".
