A trio of young talented musicians from Russia performing Rachmaninoff's most difficult piecesThe Hermitage Trio, formed in 2011, is an ultra-high-performance piano trio of three members of Russian descent, including Sergei Antonov, the winner of the cello section of the 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2007. They challenged Rachmaninoff. Since Tchaikovsky, it has been customary for Russian composers to compose piano trios in memory of special persons, and when Tchaikovsky died suddenly in October 1893, Rachmaninoff dedicated a long and moving work to his spirit. It intentionally mimics "Memories of a Great Artist" in length and structure, but Rachmaninoff is unique in that the piano plays a leading role and is extremely technical. The work is heavy with meaningful quotations, lamentations, and other thoughts about Tchaikovsky. The piano trio, which is a study in a single movement, is of course included, but what is noteworthy is the inclusion of "Vocalise" arranged for piano trio by Yuri Konjus, a composer who was a close friend of Rachmaninoff. Conyus was originally a violinist and had a thorough knowledge of the properties of strings, and his son later became married to Rachmaninoff's second daughter.It is an encore full of effect and beauty.
