Juanjo Mena’s Fourth Release on Chandos! Weber’s Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2! ■ Juanjo Mena, the passionate Spanish conductor who took over as Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, succeeding Gianandrea Noseda (now Conductor Laureate). Following his recording of Pierné with Bavze (CHAN10633), Falla in the “Música Española Series” (CHAN10694), and Montserrat de Montserrat (CHAN10735)—this fourth release from Chandos sees him making a bold shift in both country and musical style to conduct the works of the early German Romantic composer Carl Maria von Weber (1786–1826)! ■These are the “Symphony No. 1,” which the then-20-year-old Weber composed in the short span from December 14, 1806, to January 2, 1807, and the “Symphony No. 2,” which he completed from January 22 to 28. Although these two works are now overshadowed by Beethoven’s “Eroica” and “Symphony No. 4,” composed around the same time, they demonstrate a masterful use of the woodwind section and superb orchestration throughout, making them worthy of being called masterpieces of early German Romantic symphonic music that were ahead of their time. The masterpiece “Bassoon Concerto,” featuring British “Cinderella Girl” Karen Johegan as soloist, is also a delightful performance that fully showcases the rich timbre and virtuosity of this double-reed instrument.
