Maestro Oleg Caetani—whose talent, rather than his lineage, was recognized by the renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger—is pouring his passion into this “Symphony Collection” by Tansman, a neoclassical genius. Following “Vol. 3” (CHSA5065)—which won France’s Diapason d’Or and has played a major role in the reappraisal of Tansman—this “Vol. 4” of the “Symphony Collection” features a change in orchestra, from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to the Swiss Italian Radio Orchestra. The program includes the “Symphonietta No. 1” (composed in 1924), which reveals influences from Stravinsky and elements of Polish folk music; the mid-career work “Sinfonia Piccola” (1951–1952); the world premiere recording of the “Chamber Symphony” (1960); and “Sinfonietta No. 2,” a late-period work composed in 1978 at the request of Polish Radio—these four works can be seen as a condensed overview of Tansman’s career as a composer.
