When this production was staged last year at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, Placido Domingo, one of the world's greatest opera singers, played the role of Macbeth. He was co-starred by Russian mezzo-soprano diva Ekaterina Semenchuk. In this tale of doom, where ambition for the throne leads to madness, there is a scheming Lady Macbeth. She plays the role with a haunting voice full of ambition. Macbeth, beguiled by his power-hungry wife, kills the king and ascends to the throne, but ultimately loses his mental stability through doubt and fear and becomes a tyrant.Written before Freud, it is a play on tangible and intangible guilt. The scathing critique of power portrayed has been highly regarded throughout the ages. Domingo has played the tenor Macduff many times before, but here, in the baritone role of Macbeth, he is unbelievably well suited at the age of 75 to this work he has known for so many years.
