Strauss, Richard (1864-1949)

Description:

The genius Bechtloff further explores the original ideas of Hofmannsthal and Strauss in this rare record of the first draft version of "Ariadne of Naxos" performed at the Salzburg Festival in 2012. Originally conceived as an opera, "The Townsman Aristocrat". The length of the work was not appreciated at the time of its premiere (Hoffmanstahl and Richard Strauss originally had a difference of opinion), and it was eventually substantially rewritten to become the current "Ariadne of Naxos". This is why the catalog of Strauss's works also shows a mixture of "The Townsman Aristocrat" and "Ariadne of Naxos" in Op.60. There have been recordings of the first draft version on CD by Kent Nagano/Lyon Orchestra, and some connoisseurs have enjoyed the differences from the current version, but this time it was performed in a more "bumpy" way, this time on stage directed by Bechtloff at the Salzburg Festival. It is a wonder that this piece has not been talked about. In the Kent Nagano recording, only the overture was performed, but in the Salzburg Festival performance, actors were set up and Molière's drama was performed. The ballet was also inserted, and even the characters began to dance. The composer is not in the trouser-role we are used to seeing him in. The "Aria" by Zerbinetta, performed by Elena Moschuk, has also become extremely difficult. And our own Kaufman plays Bacchus in the finale. Anyway, it is long. But enjoyable. This is a timelessly preserved version worthy of the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss's birth. Sony Music
