[Release Marking the 100th Anniversary of the Premiere of *The Rite of Spring*] Stravinsky: *The Rite of Spring* & *The Firebird*—Legendary "Composer-Conductor" Anniversary Edition ■The world premiere of Stravinsky’s *The Rite of Spring*, performed by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris on May 29, 1913, was a landmark event that left an indelible mark on 20th-century art history. This two-disc album, released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the premiere of *The Rite of Spring*, features performances conducted and performed by Stravinsky himself. ■As a composer, Stravinsky was also a talented conductor and pianist, and from an early stage, he focused his performing career on his own works. Beginning in the late 1920s, he started recording his own compositions while conducting, and continued to capture his interpretations of his works on record until the late 1960s. His unique, almost unassuming conducting style—in which he made no use of a baton but instead made small gestures with his clenched fist—produced performances brimming with the keen insight only a composer who knew his own works inside and out could provide. These recordings are still listened to today as definitive references for each piece. In particular, the collection of stereo recordings of his own works, made for Sony Classical from the late 1950s onward, spans 22 CDs, covers the vast majority of Stravinsky’s works, and possesses an immortal value that can truly be called a historical legacy. ■ The program features two works: *The Rite of Spring* and the 1945 suite version of *The Firebird* (the last concert suite Stravinsky arranged from *The Firebird*). Stravinsky had recorded both works under his own baton since the SP era; there are three types of official studio recordings of *The Rite of Spring* and four types of *The Firebird* (including the complete version), in addition to several unofficial live recordings that have been released.
