Lithuanian virtuoso Geringas celebrates his 70th birthday with the release of his best album of recordings from the German Profile and Hensler labels. Geringas, who studied with Rostropovich, inherited his teacher's style of playing and is known for his large scale and flamboyant performances. Born into a musical family, Geringas attracted international attention when he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970, and moved to Germany in 1975, where he has been active as a performer mainly in Germany and as a professor at the Hamburg Conservatory of Music, teaching younger musicians. This disc contains nine pieces that demonstrate the breadth of Geringas's repertoire. He has also commissioned works by composers from his native Lithuania, including works by Vytautas Raulshas, the elder composer and chairman of the Lithuanian Composers' Union. King International
