Jaroussky's music has always been appealing because of the aesthetic appeal of his overwhelmingly beautiful voice, but in this performance of the cantatas by the baroque masters Bach and Telemann, Jaroussky boldly confronts the works with a restrained singing voice. Jaroussky said of the performance, "To perform sacred music is to perform music that is sacred. Playing sacred music is like encountering something bigger than yourself. It is like encountering an unknown force that surpasses you. Everyone who hears it, even if not in a religious sense, will feel that way." The Brockes Passion, with a text written by Brockes, an important figure in 18th century German literature, is Telemann's masterpiece with its humanistic, intertwined sound.The overture is an instrumental symphony with a solo oboe, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra's skillful performance makes for an ideal performance. Bach's Cantata No. 82, "I am full" is one of the most popular of his cantatas, and is famous as a cantata for solo bass voice, but the second version for solo soprano voice is also well-known.
