A portrait of Mozart and the voice of the castrato expressed through overwhelming vocal powerOne of the top countertenors of our time, Franco Fagioli's PENTATONE debut album is Mozart-themed. It features arias from operas and religious works written by Mozart with the voice of the castrato in mind, as well as the famous "Exultate Ubilate". It is performed with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, a flexible orchestra that even changes instruments and playing style depending on the work. Castrato and Mozart may not generally be associated with each other, but in fact, roles sung by castrato appear in early operas such as "Lucio Silla" and "The False Gardener" to "The Mercy of Emperor Tito" written in the 1790s. Another masterpiece, "Exultate ubilate," now a favorite in the repertoire of sopranos, was written for Mozart's favorite castrato, Venanzio Lauzzini. The music written for castrato is full of difficult pieces that require a beautiful voice and high technique, but Fagioli sang them flawlessly with her own powerful voice and overwhelming vocal technique. It was as if the castrato of the past had come back to life in the present day.This is a recording of Fagioli's fullest effort, as he has strongly wanted to make a Mozart album someday since the beginning of his life as a musician.
