The "Golberg Variations" played on harmonium! Dirk Ruimes, one of the few professional harmonium players in the world specializing in harmonium (harmonium/reed organ), plays Bach's "Gortberg Variations"! The complete Gortberg Variations were recorded on a 19th century French harmonium, rather than the two-stage harpsichord that was originally envisioned. This instrument, which was called "orgue expressif" (expressive organ) before the name "harmonium" was established at that time, enables "singing" and "whispering" expressions that are not possible with the harpsichord or modern piano by freely changing volume and tone with foot-pressure wind pressure. The "Double Expression mechanism," which allows different tone settings for the left and right hand parts, makes it possible to accentuate the counterpoint structure with different tones for each voice part. Dirk Ruimes holds degrees in organ, harpsichord, and church music from the Conservatory of Music and a degree in musicology from the University of He has won numerous national and international organ competitions, including the European Organ Improvisation Competition, and in recent years has attracted attention as one of the few professional harmonium players in the world. He is also active as a playwright and church musician, including artistic director of the Rongen & Tongen Foundation.Over the years, he has also been involved in the production of Dutch radio programs and has published a book on Bach's "Matthew Passion".
