Turkish Folk Dance - Diyarbakır Diyarbakır, a city in southeastern Turkey on the Tigris River, has a population of 589,000. However, if the inhabitants of the slums surrounding the city are included, the population is estimated to be over 1 million. Diyarbakır is also known as the main city of the Kurdish people in Turkey, and has flourished as a trading center since ancient times as it is located at the nexus connecting the Iran-Iraq region to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. This album contains the traditional dance music of such a region. The music is simple, consisting of a zurna (a double-reed woodwind instrument) and a davul (a large double-sided drum), and is sometimes accompanied by yoo-hoo-like shouts.
