A fascinating fusion of Russian and German music on Schnittke SACD hybrid disc by the genius Yurovsky Soul of Schnittke. It has been a while since a new recording of Schnittke's magnum opus appeared on the market. The recording of Schnittke's Symphony No. 3 by the brilliant Vladimir Jurowski, born in 1972, is a remarkable one. Schnittke's Third Symphony was commissioned by Kurt Masur and premiered in November 1981 by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Masur. 52 minutes long, the work draws on sonic material from over 30 composers from Bach, Handel, Mozart, and the New Vienna School to Weill to Stockhausen and Henze. It is also known as the "German Symphony" because it reflects the history of Austro-German music.There have been Melodia recordings by Rozhestvensky and the Soviet Ministry of Culture, and BIS recordings by Elie Klass and the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, but this recording by Vladimir Jurowski, a Russian who grew up in Germany and conducts the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, is the ideal performance group. The performance is a masterpiece, with Jurovsky's concentration and keen sensitivity in portraying the anxious psychology and black humor of Schnittke's unique style. The recording was made in July 2014 at the Haus des Rundfunks RBB (Berlin Broadcasting House), but it is worth noting that only the organ part was recorded and mixed at St. Matthias Church in Berlin.
