Description:
Gastinel, the New Queen of the Cello. Three Enchanting French Sonatas! The latest recording by Gustinel, one of today’s greatest female cellists, features three enchanting French sonatas. Right from the opening of the disc—with Franck’s remarkably quiet and unhurried introduction—listeners are instantly drawn into the captivating world the two musicians create together. There are no gimmicks whatsoever. The appeal lies in the exquisite balance between depth and a sense of effortless ease. The piano playing by Claire Desailly—a renowned ensemble musician who also performs primarily in France—is superb. While Frank’s interpretation is restrained overall, she makes each passage resonate as if telling a story, allowing listeners to fully savor the charm of both the piece and the instrument itself. While passionate, high-energy performances certainly have their appeal, this interpretation by Gastinel and Désert exudes a calm, composed elegance, allowing us to rediscover the charm of this masterpiece that shines so brilliantly in the annals of music history. Both Debussy and Poulenc are masterfully rendered with the dry, chic, and ever-changing expressions one would expect from these two artists active in France, yet the occasional touch of charm adds an indescribable flavor. In the booklet, Gastinel herself states that she feels very happy to be able to tackle this program “as if exploring her own roots,” and that she also takes great joy in performing alongside Claire—my “Clariette”—who always inspires her with her generous spirit. The result is a captivating album by two accomplished female musicians. King International
