Description:
Dante never visited Sicily, but he loved and mythically envisioned it as the crucible of ancient Mediterranean culture. This disc is a musical journey through 13th- and 14th-century Sicily, exploring the musical and poetic suggestions that Al Quintara derives from the great poet's influence, going back to the education and traditions rooted in the fertile cultural soil of the island. They mix scholarly sources and oral traditions without opposition, focusing on poetic themes, polyphonic music, and musical instruments found in manuscripts and medieval iconography. They draw on past literature and utilize the techniques handed down by the Sicilian people, while stripping today's traditions of their later sediments and connecting them to the imaginary performances of Dante's time. The recording was made in the hall of the Piaggio Museum using Neumann U47/U48/M49 microphones from the collection of Giulio Cesare Ricci, and the SACD was mastered using an analog and tube "Signoricci" system.
