Jaime Luzzati's 1994 album, representing Uruguay's finest musicians, finally arrives on vinyl! Jaime Luzzati and Mauricio Rosenkoff are Uruguay's most beloved and influential artists. An innovative musician, Luzzati redefined Uruguayan music in the 1980s with his unique approach, blending deeply rooted Uruguayan rhythms with an international sensibility. Meanwhile, Rosenkoff, a prominent writer and playwright who emerged in the early 1960s, was also a key figure in the historic Tupamaros guerrilla movement. Their paths crossed in 1987 when Ruth composed the music for Rosenkoff's play The Revenge of the Great Tureque. Through this collaboration, Ruth discovered a collection of sonnets Rosenkopf had written while imprisoned under Uruguay's brutal dictatorship. Confined to solitary confinement for over eleven years, Rosenkopf composed these poems as his lifeline, scribbling them on toilet paper or hiding them in the hems of clothes his family collected for laundry. Despite every hardship, the poems survived.These sonnets depict a delicate and moving love story set in Montevideo during the 1950s. Ruth was deeply moved and captivated by the work, resolving to take on the challenge of setting them to music. The result was La Margarita (1994). Ruth masterfully fused Uruguay's rich musical traditions—candombe, murga, tango, milonga—with folk and rock elements, creating groundbreaking work. This gave birth to deeply resonant songs that only he could express. The music is, of course, highly regarded as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the unwavering power of love and art.
