Savall/Mare: Exotic Suites (2SACD) A masterful performance by Savall, bringing the 350th anniversary of Mare’s birth to a spectacular close! From 1975 to 1992, Savall recorded excerpts—each comprising a single LP or CD—from each of the five volumes of Marais’s viol suites on the Astre label, thereby raising public awareness of Marais’s music. This new recording includes all the pieces from Volume 4, which was originally recorded in 1977; however, unlike the original recording—which featured a trio consisting of a viol, harpsichord, and theorbo or guitar—unlike the original 1977 recording. Instead, it features a seven-piece ensemble incorporating the latest research findings, and the repertoire has expanded from a selection of 12 pieces to all 33 pieces in their entirety, resulting in a performance that truly showcases Savall’s status as a leading authority on viola da gamba. Volume 4 also includes “Six French-Style Suites” and “Suites for Three Viols (2 Suites),” but it is this “Exotic-Style” suite that remains particularly famous. The title “Exotic” contrasts semantically with the term “French-style” found in the same volume, signifying a “foreign” style—with a particular focus on England. This recording is truly the definitive version of this work, which holds a preeminent place among Marais’s viola da gamba collections.
