Haydn's own arrangement of "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross" for clavier! Nikola Stavy is also known for his world premiere recordings of piano works by Fauré (BISSA2389) and Tishchenko (BISSA2189), a composer from the former Soviet Union known for his difficult compositions. This Haydn album was originally released on the Mandala label and has now been remastered by the BIS label and re-released on SACD hybrid format on the same label. Haydn's masterpiece "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross" was originally composed for orchestra in 1785, and in 1787 he arranged a string quartet version for performance in Cadiz, Spain during Lent, followed by an oratorio version with lyrics in 1794. In this recording, the piano plays the arrangement for clavier supervised by Haydn. Nicolas Stavy studied with Dominique Merlet, and was also trained by Alfred Brendel, Gérard Frémy, and Christian Ivaldi.He is a talented musician who won a special prize at the 2000 Chopin Competition, which Yundi Li won, and the second prize at the following year's Geneva International Music Competition in 2001.
