This collection features works for flute and piano by women composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Amy Beach and Lily Boulanger, both well-known composers, are fine examples of French taste in the first half of the 20th century, while Coleman's "Family of Man" (born in 1970) is a tasteful little piece with French harmony and melody that does not merely imitate them. Gubaidulina, who is known for his serious and intense works such as Offertorium, has two works that are surprisingly lyrical and full of humor. The two works by Gubaidulina are surprisingly lyrical, humorous, and masterful, and Japanese flutists should take up these works more often. Flutist Virginia Brofit Kanzer is an accomplished soloist who has served as principal of an American symphony orchestra. Tobu Shoji Co.
