Angel or Devil? Chandler & La Serenissima Unveil the Lineage of French and Italian Baroque Violin Techniques! Adrian Chandler, hailed by *The Times* as “the incarnation of Vivaldi.” La Serenissima, one of Britain’s leading early music ensembles led by Chandler, portrays the light and darkness of the Baroque era on their new album, *Hell’s Angels*. In 1728, a legendary duet between Pietro Locatelli and Jean-Marie Leclerc took place at the court of Kassel, Germany. It is said that witnesses described Leclerc’s playing as “angelic” and Locatelli’s as “demonic.” The album title, *Hell’s Angels*, draws inspiration from this anecdote, and the ensemble has crafted a program that explores the fusion of performance styles and techniques in French and Italian Baroque music. Vivaldi’s Sonata RV820, an early work rarely performed, is missing the manuscript from measure 60 onward, so Chandler himself completed the final movement. In addition, the program features a carefully curated selection of the most technically demanding chamber music of the era by composers such as Leclair, Guimard, Marcello, and Massitti. This album truly showcases the essence of “La Serenissima,” tracing the history of the violin—which began as a mere accompanying instrument and achieved a dramatic rise in social status to become a virtuoso instrument requiring extraordinary technique. Adrian Chandler A violinist born in Merseyside in 1974. He founded La Serenissima in 1994 while studying at the Royal College of Music and has dedicated his life to exploring Italian Baroque music, particularly the works of Vivaldi. After overcoming a serious injury in which two tendons in his right shoulder were severed, he made his conducting debut in 2025 in the presence of King Charles III and made a full return to performing in 2026. His recordings with La Serenissima have earned him two Gramophone Awards (2010, 2017). Their recording of Vivaldi’s *The Four Seasons* (SIGCD886), made to commemorate the ensemble’s 30th anniversary, continues to receive extremely high acclaim, having been selected as a Top Choice for the 2026 BBC Radio 3 “Building a Library” series.
