Description:
Richters’ Vibrant Performances from His Youth Believe it or not, a recording of Richter at age 33 has resurfaced. It’s a 1948 live recording from Moscow—made a full 10 years before the “Sofia Live” performance that astonished the world. His Bach is brimming with incredible vitality; one can only imagine how overwhelmed those who attended the actual concert must have been. While the “Sonata in B-flat Major, BWV 963” has previously been released on the Venezia label, the other pieces from that same concert are making their debut here. Furthermore, the “English Suite No. 3,” recorded a month and a half later, is also a rare find. Although Richter went on to leave behind many wonderful Bach recordings in his later years, the youthful energy heard here is truly precious. It’s surprising to find Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 22” from the November concert included here as well. Choosing this piece—which, for some reason, often receives negative reviews among Beethoven’s piano sonatas—is a testament to Richter’s unique artistic vision. It sounds like a wonderfully captivating work. Furthermore, the “French Suite No. 2” from a 1968 concert in Dublin, Ireland, is also a rare gem. While his artistry has clearly matured by this point, you can still hear the magic that Richter creates when he’s in his element. King International
