Metzmacher & Deutsche Symphony Orchestra Berlin's "Life of a Hero" 1st draft! First edition of Varèse's "America" with great power! Metzmacher and the Deutsche Symphonieorchester Berlin present "Life of a Hero". The first draft, which has been recorded and performed relatively infrequently, is the one that ends the work in a fading manner. The coupling is Varèse's "America," also written in the early 20th century. As is typical of Metzmacher, the first version, which requires 142 names, is also used here. In 1910, Varèse met R. Strauss in Berlin and studied with him (no works written by Varèse while in Germany have survived). Varèse wrote "America" between 1918 and 1922, making this work the earliest of his works that we know of today.This single-movement symphonic poem is characterized by a wide range of "sounds," from musical tones to siren noises. Metzmacher was born in 1957 in Hanover, Germany, and has a strong passion for contemporary music, especially innovative programming. He was music director of the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin from the fall of 2007 to the summer of 2010.
