Nels Cline's third Blue Note album is now available, and he has demonstrated his versatility not only as Wilco's guitarist, but also in a variety of other projects. The album features saxophonist and punk-jazz icon Skerik, keyboard marvel Brian Marsella, bass great Trevor Dunn, longtime collaborator and drummer Scott Amendola, Brazilian spontaneous and experimental musical program featuring percussionist Cyro Baptista and an extended version of his long-running project "The Nels Cline Singers." 'This band had never played a show together before. So basically everything was an experiment. We recorded these jams, and we thought we'd take little snippets of them and make a psychedelic record, like a cut-and-paste collage. But when we listened back to these jams, we liked them so much that we wanted to leave them as they were.And some of the most amazing changes, they are not edits. They happened during long improvisations in the studio, and they are almost magical," he says. Co-produced by Klein and Eli Cruz at The Bunker in Brooklyn, this is Klein's most experimental and cutting-edge Blue Note work to date. The little material we brought to the session," he explains, "we learned and recorded on the fly." Of "Beam/Spiral," Klein says: "It has a little bit of an indie rock flavor. There's a little bit of an indie rock flavor, especially in the second section. It's typical Singers stuff, pounding eighth notes and big chords. But the more open-ended first section reminds me of early Weather Report or Wayne Shorter's Odyssey of Ithaca. It's a remarkable piece!
