Fanny Mendelssohn

Description:

Documentary film "Fanny - The Other Mendelssohn" by Sheila Hayman Mercury Studios is pleased to announce the DVD and BD release of a new documentary film on the life of Fanny Mendelssohn, the sister of Felix Mendelssohn, another composer and pianist of the early 19th century German composer and pianist. The film is directed by Sheila Hayman, a descendant of Fanny's and a recipient of the BAFTA and BAFTA Fulbright awards. At a time when women's roles were very different than they are today, several of Fanny's songs were published under her brother's name. She composed nearly 450 pieces of music during her lifetime, many of which were never published or performed publicly. This film details the process of searching for the original score to her lost "Easter Sonata," initially believed to have been written by her brother, and also chronicles her life.Fanny's music is performed in the film by Decca recording artist Isata Canay-Mason. Anyone who has ever attended a wedding will have heard Felix Mendelssohn's "Wedding March". It is perhaps one of the most popular classical pieces of all time. But he was not the only genius in Felix's family: Fanny, the composer of the little-known "Easter Sonata," was discovered in 1972. In this documentary film, Fanny - The Other Mendelssohn, director Sheila Hayman reveals the extraordinary life of a composer long ignored by classical music aficionados and reveals how this lost masterpiece, attributed to Felix, was actually composed by Fanny. The film seeks to prove that the lost masterpiece attributed to Felix was, in fact, composed by Fanny. Charismatic pianist Isata Canay-Mason beautifully revives Fanny's music in this story of a very modern woman who lived 200 years ago. The film premiered in North America at the 2023 New York Documentary Film Festival and has likewise screened at FIPADoc, FilmBath, and other festivals. Subtitled in English, German, French and Italian. Limited edition. No Japanese subtitles. (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
