Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3, one of the most important concerto works for violin and orchestra in Romantic music, was completed in 1880 and dedicated to Sarasate, the first performer. The Cello Concerto No. 1 was composed in 1872, during Saint-Saens' prime years, the year of his masterpieces such as "Samson and Delilah" and Piano Concerto No. 4. It was dedicated to Auguste Troubaix, professor at the Paris Conservatory, and premiered on January 19, 1873, with Troubaix playing solo. The "No. 2," composed later in his career, is rarely performed, and the "No. 1" is considered to be Saint-Saens' most famous cello concerto, with the entire work played without interruption and structured like a single movement.
