From Bogdan Ratinski to Dennis Bovell, to Phew, the label “Disciples”—a subsidiary of “Warp” that has brought high-quality cult recordings to the world—has released the mini-album FurtherCombinations as a follow-up to HeavyCombination, a compilation by the late Joseph Kamaru, a little-known local hero from Kenya. Following the previous release, Disciples and KMRU—Kamaru’s grandson and a sound artist—have once again curated the track selection from the archives. This release features tracks where diverse elements—including highlife, ’70s funk, folk, disco, and gospel—intersect, characterized by dynamic rhythms and call-and-response vocals. The tracks have been meticulously remastered from the original tapes, bringing the raw grooves and sonic texture of that era back to life for today’s listeners.
