Description:

Shabaka Hutchings, the pinnacle of contemporary UK jazz who continues to redefine the scene's forefront, releases his third solo album, 'Of The Earth'!! Shabaka Hutchings, the pinnacle of contemporary UK jazz who continues to push the scene's boundaries, releases his third solo album, 'Of The Earth'. This marks the first album released on his newly founded label, Shabaka Records. 'Of The Earth' is an intensely personal work, with Shabaka himself composing, producing, performing, and mixing every track. This work organically unites the dance-oriented, rhythm-focused approach developed with Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming with the intricate, textural soundscapes pursued in recent solo works (Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace and Afrikan Culture), clearly presenting a new contour for Shabaka as an instrumentalist/producer. Beats and loops created on portable gear during tour travel form the foundation of the tracks, over which choral flute melodies soar expansively. Electronic rhythm sequences depict narratives of diaspora journeys. Shabaka also ventures into rapping on this album, stating: "I was inspired by André 3000's fearless, unpretentious approach to honestly exploring new dimensions. That's why I decided to find my own voice on this album."- Shabaka In mid-2025, Shabaka ended his self-imposed hiatus from saxophone playing with a performance at a memorial concert for South African drumming master Louis Mohloko. 'Of The Earth' is the first recording created after approximately a year and a half without playing saxophone. It also serves as a reflection, examining what the time spent primarily engaged with the flute might bring to his future relationship with the instrument. D'Angelo's 'Brown Sugar' was the first CD I ever bought, sparking a lasting curiosity about the emotional possibilities inherent in a self-produced/self-performed album. This record is a celebration of freedom in creative self-expression. Before COVID, I could only play clarinet and saxophone, and knew nothing about music production or how to play the flute. So this is a journey of learning, and a work that looks back on the music born from that journey. - Shabaka
