Alexis Cosenco, Les Ambassadeurs - La Grande Écurie

Description:

Start of the complete Mendelssohn orchestral works with period instruments and sheet music! The first volume is now available! The ancient music group Les Zambasadours - La Grande Ecurie was founded in 2010 by Alexis Kosenko, who is also an active baroque flutist. They have launched a series of Mendelssohn's complete orchestral works on period instruments and interpretations of the time. The series focuses on rarely used editions of Mendelssohn's works, which are expected to be very promising, since not much attention has yet been paid to the differences in editions and period interpretations, despite his great popularity. The first series of this concert features Symphony No. 4 "Italia" and No. 5 "Reformation". Mendelssohn, a perfectionist, was always dissatisfied with his own works, and he always made changes to them. He began major revisions in 1934, but died before they were completely finished. According to Kosenko, the following changes were made: the material of the last movement was extended by 40 bars, the theme (especially the second movement) was reworked, the outline and development of the third movement minuet were drastically changed, and the piece was further moved away from Italy to give it a Scottish atmosphere. The world of never-before-heard "Italian" symphonies is brought to life by instruments used in Germany in the 1830s!
