Beautiful Tones from the French Classical Style OrganFrançois d'Ajancourt (1684-1758) was a French composer, organist, and harpsichordist of the late Baroque period. Although overshadowed by contemporaries such as François Couperin and Jean-Philippe Rameau, his surviving keyboard works offer a fascinating glimpse into the brilliant French classical organ tradition of the early 18th century. Born in Rouen in 1684, Dajancourt was organist at the Madeleine-en-la-Cite church in Paris from 1701 to 1706, then returned to Rouen and for 52 years, from 1706 to his death in 1758, built the massive Rouen Cathedral (128 meters high at the time; enlarged to 151 meters in the 19th century). He was the organist of the huge Rouen Cathedral (128 meters high at the time, increased to 151 meters in the 19th century) from 1706 until his death in 1758, and in parallel, he was the organist of the abbey of Saint-Ouen, the church of Saint-Terblain, and the church of Saint-Jean, all in Rouen, for the rest of his life. During this period, he was appointed one of the four organists of the royal chapel in Paris in 1714, a position of great prestige, but the only organ piece for which a score survives is the "Organ Piece, Volume 1" (1733).The collection consists of works arranged in suites based on church melody according to the liturgical customs of the time, and each suite contains various pieces corresponding to a particular part of the Catholic Mass, such as the plan jus, fugue, lectionary, and diologue. The performer, Chikako Nishikawa, studied organ performance with Federico del Sordo at the Pontifical Institute of Religious Music (graduate course) in Rome, with an emphasis on ancient music. The recording was made in 2024 using the instrument installed in the parish church of St. Giuseppe e Lucia in Santa Lucia di Budoia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Northern Italy. The organ was built in 2000 by Andrea Zeni, who was born in Northern Italy, in the French classical style.The booklet (English, 12 pages) includes commentary by Chikako Nishikawa and others, stop tables, and photos of the organ.
