KEITH HUDSON’s classic psychedelic dub album is finally being reissued as a domestic CD and official CD! The masterpiece *PLAYING IT COOL & PLAYING IT RIGHT*, which was reissued in 2015 by the reggae reissue label *BASICREPLAY* (under BASICCHANNEL) but had since gone out of print, is now available on CD! Originally released in 1981 by New York’s *JOINT INTERNATIONAL*, the album was initially slated to feature one of Keith’s teenage sons on vocals, but Love Joys, Wayne Jarrett, and—most notably—Keith himself ended up taking the mic. Like the Wackies, Hudson was also a devotee of Studio One. This album follows the strategy of overdubbing Coxon’s signature rhythms. With Lloyd “Brewacky” Jones serving as executive producer, this is a deeply immersive world that strongly evokes Lee Perry’s Black Ark era. The title track, the first song on the album, is based on Horace Andy’s “DON’T THINK ABOUT ME,” which Keith produced, but isn’t that guitar phrase actually the melody from the Congos’ “FISHERMAN”? There are plenty of highlights to enjoy, including Keith’s vocals—which aren’t exactly polished but have a unique charm—the addition of female backing vocals, and the funky arrangements featuring wah-wah guitar. While 12 tracks are credited, all of them feature a dancehall-style dub version directly appended to the latter half of each track, so there are effectively only 6 tracks. A strange yet compelling dub masterpiece unlike any other dub album. The cover faithfully reproduces the original white sleeve with only a stamped design from the time of its release—a must-have for collectors. A must-listen for dub fans! Limited edition pressing.
