A 17th-century world of “wabi-sabi” brought to life by the lute. Toru Sakurada—a beloved disciple of world-renowned lutenist Toyohiko Sato, Secretary-General of the Lute & Early Guitar Society of Japan, and a leading master of the Japanese lute scene—releases his solo album on Toyohiko Sato’s independent label, Nostalgia! The album features four dance pieces related to “The Lovers” by Johann Pachelbel—famous for “Pachelbel’s Canon,” which also serves as the album’s title—along with works by composers such as the Elder Gautier and the Elder Garo, who helped establish the “11-course French Baroque lute.” Amid the heyday of 17th-century Baroque music, when instrumental performance grew larger and more powerful through the orchestra format, this music took the opposite path, evolving into a more introspective art form (in his liner notes, Toyohiko Sato points out parallels here with the concepts of “wabi-sabi” found in the tea ceremony). Standing in stark contrast to so-called “virtuoso” works, these pieces use the beautiful resonance of the lute to depict the murmur of a waterfall, the songs of birds, nature, and the act of love. The instrument used is an 11-course Baroque lute crafted by Martin de Vitte in 2009. It is an exact replica of the original “Laurentius Greif” lute, made around 1600 and owned by Toyohiko Sato.
