Schumann, Robert (1810-1856)
Description:
When Schumann, a spirited 20-year-old, had to give up piano because of a broken finger, he actually loved the cello so much that he wondered whether to give up music or turn to the cello. After much hesitation, Schumann decided to compose, and his love of the cello culminated in the "Cello Concerto" written in 1850. The three movements, which are played seamlessly, are full of laconic melodies and romantic emotions, with a particularly beautiful slow middle section in the second movement. The Royal Northern Sinfonia is also noteworthy. The work is full of the fullness of Schumann's inner voice, which is what he seeks. With the exception of the "Five Pieces in the Style of Folk Songs," all of the other works were written for other instruments, but they sound perfectly at home on the cello, and Schwabe's masterful arrangements and calm, gentle sound allow the listener to directly experience the dreamlike world Schumann envisioned.
