Description:
Dovienne left his mark as an important composer of flute works in the late 18th century. Originally a member of the military band, he taught music to the children of his colleagues at the then "School of Free Music". During the French Revolution, when the music school became a national institution and was reorganized into the Conservatoire de Paris in 1795, Dovienne was appointed professor of flute and became even more active. His "Theory and Practice of Flute Playing" is also known as an excellent instructional book that established French wind instrumental technique at that time. This album, the last of Dovienne's complete flute concerto cycle, includes Concerto No. 13 and two concerto symphonies. Of the two concerto symphonies, the third was written for clarinet. The competing tones are fascinating. The album also includes a flute version of Viotti's Violin Concerto, composed around the same time, which can be savored with Gallois' masterful technique.
