Organist Tom Wimpenny presents a collection of works by Messiaen (1908-1992), including a performance of Messiaen's "The Nativity of the Lord (8.573332)" released in 2015, which was also very dense, and now the organ sounds even more brilliant. The Ascension of Christ" was originally written for orchestra in 1932, and was premiered in 1935 and performed with great success in the United States. Prior to its premiere, an organ version was written, but the third movement was replaced and settled on this form. Originally, the movement was characterized by a gorgeous trumpet fanfare (slightly un-Messiaen-like), but this organ version is much more fluid, with avalanche-like passages.The two posthumous works, "Prelude" and "Offering to the Eucharistic Mystery," were discovered in 1997 and show the influence of Marcel Dupré and Tournemire.
