Handel (1685-1759) was born in Germany in the same year as Bach, but moved to England in his late twenties and ended his life here. Perhaps because of this, he rarely used his native language, German, in his works. This "Nine Arias" is a rare example of a work with German lyrics. The Hamburg poet Brockes was widely admired at the time (others, such as Telemann, used his texts), and the content, in which he finds God in the beauty of nature and prays to his presence, must have captured Handel's heart. Although the orchestra is small (soprano, violin, and bass), it is as dramatic and technical as an operatic aria. It is a work in which the beauty of the voice can be fully appreciated.The Gloria, written in 1707 during his stay in Italy, has been missing for a long time, but only after its discovery in 2001 did it become an important part of the Roman Catholic Church's repertoire.
