Description:

Two of the most popular works by Bartók (1881-1945) are performed by the Allsopp & Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Lamenting the deteriorating political situation in his native Hungary, the 59-year-old Bartók fled to the United States, but it was not a comfortable place for him. His health was deteriorating, and his creative spirit was rekindled when he received a commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which his friends said was orchestrated by Bartók. Bartók responded by composing the Concerto for Orchestra. Bartók himself was completely reenergized and was able to continue his musical activities. The other piece, "Cheretto for Strings," was written at the age of 55, when he was immersed in the study of folk music. It is said that he had the sound of Indonesian nogamelan in mind when he added the celesta, which gives the piece a mysterious depth. This piece is also recommended for those who want to genuinely enjoy the sound of the instruments.
