Here comes another exciting collection of piano pieces by Frederic Jevski (1938-), a composer best known for his "Undying People" Variations, which have recently enjoyed a surge in popularity. The first piece, "Four Pieces," also features an occasionally familiar "Indomitable People" theme-like melody embedded in an arcane, eerie tremolo figure. Of course, it is so fleeting that it can easily get lost somewhere if you are not careful. The second piece is a rhythm-oriented piece that begins with two hands in unison. He says he was influenced by his friend Steve Lacy (who was a pupil of Thelonious Monk). The third piece, a slow melody derived from Andean dances, is somewhat reminiscent of Shostakovich's works. At the end of the piece, after a destructive series of chords, there is a complete silence. The fourth piece is also a puzzling piece, with multiple layers of sound assaulting peaceful ears.The "Lament of a Housewife," which was inspired by the diary of an anonymous female composer, is said to have been strongly influenced by Beethoven. Don't be fooled by the first too-obvious melody of this piece either. And "Hard Cuts," with its ensemble, is an abstract sound compound. It is a delightful and frenzied work with a cleverly contrived orgy of sound. The third piece, "Like bees," for example, would drive you crazy if it were played in your ear while you were sleeping.
