In Baroque music, there are not many works written specifically for Pentecost or Trinity Sunday, but this album is a noteworthy release that sheds light on this rare and beautiful repertoire. These are pieces of music that served as a source of spiritual comfort for people in 17th-century Northern Germany amid the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War. Drawing on the rich Lutheran tradition of sacred choral music, the motets and cantatas composed by Zelle, Scheidt, Bruns, and others, along with vibrant instrumental performances, resonate like a meticulously woven mosaic. The clear tones of a rare 1518 replica “Apfelregal” (a small organ with a gold-plated, apple-shaped resonator and a unique timbre resembling a blend of wind instruments) also add color to the work. The performance is presented by the Margareta Consort, an early music ensemble led by Marit Bruklufs and continuing its rapid rise alongside associate artistic director and tenor Kevin Skelton. Featuring Sieze de Vries, a leading authority on North German Baroque organ music, the ensemble fuses historical research with a fresh sensibility. Following the previously released albums *German Christmas* and *German Passions*, this final installment of the trilogy is an album brimming with warm charm that brings the “sounds of the soul”—passed down through centuries—to our ears today.
